Toth - "Alex"

Introduction by Milton Caniff
Every Successful syndicated cartoonist knows that there is a guy
(or gal) drudging away in an attic somewhere in Maine, or Texas,
or Kentucky who will someday replace him or her on the comics pages
of the world's newspapers.
Examples of Alex's work are shown in this volume, but you will
not see the complex sides of this dedicated person. He is capable
of full-blown admiration for another cartoonist, yet reserves the
right to be straight-out critical of anything he does not enjoy
in his peer's performance. There is a touch of the pedant in this,
but any cartoonist who ignores Toth's comments is denying himself
a skilled evaluation from a highly qualified student of art.
Suspense-adventure story strips are much admired in Europe. Alex
Toth is an especial favorite amongst the devoted readers of the
comic magazines in that area, The Errol Flynn type character Alex
Toth developed has capsulated the escapist kind of cartoon-literature
in both continents. Then, just when Toth seems catalogued in the
Alex Raymond school, he stands back and points the satirist's pen
at the entire romantic world of the St. Moritz-Biarritz scene.
I should be happy that Alex Toth has no entered the lists in the
twenty-seven illustrations every week rat race. Competition is rough
enough without him. However, I wish he were doing seven-days a week
adventure cartoon strip--with all the beautiful people and the gorgeous
backgrounds. I am certain he would produce.
